"A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014."

Poet: Looking so much like her Daddy but those lips...I'll always take the credit.

I took an abundance of average photos this week. Perhaps I'll blame the grey skies or the persistent humidity (so sticky and damp) or perhaps it has a lot to do with my busyness and the rollercoaster ride of emotions that comes with Daniel being away. Regardless of the reason, I didn't feel particularly inspired to take a trip back through the last few days' photos and find a portrait to represent the week. However, amidst the blur and the bad light I found this capture; Poet slightly fearful of a big dog, a somewhat mature expression that I don't see very often. It was a pleasant surprise.

Perhaps you would like to share why you chose your specific portraits for this week? Was it easy to pick or did you have to umm and ahh for a while? Was it an expression, or the light or an experience that won you over?

..........................................................................................................................

Wow, every week I become more enamoured with your photos and your blogs. This week I oohed over Lilia and Evan's portraits; earthy tones and young, free lives / stunning light in the most surprising of places...little Penny looking so small / a toilet-training Chloe - love her sweet toes / Olive never ceases to amaze me with her wonderfully styled outfits / and finally, gorgeous Lucy and her big blue eyes. Sending her lots of love as she journeys towards a big operation.

  1. Oh goodness. Poet's expression really is so mature, graceful, and lovely here. <3 Our photograph for this week was one of those -- "that's the one!" -- moments. I knew as soon as I snapped it.

  3. we had a professional photo session this week so picking just one was excruciating, though this was the clear winner.

  5. sometimes it's so hard to choose a photo! Sometimes it's because I think there are too many great ones, and other times because I think they're all just average like you said.

  6. Most weeks I know as soon as I snap my portrait that it is the one…but there are definitely those weeks where it takes me longer to choose as none of them are really jumping out at me.

  7. Funny you ask Jodi. I wrote my post last night as it was such an easy decision this week - both photographs capturing their little personalities, their essence of late. I think they are my favourites for this series so far…I'm sorry I don't comment as much lately. I'm a poor blogger at the moment. Have been reading about your solo parenting experience and send you love & strength. I think it will be an experience that will grow both you and Daniel (and the littles!) in wonderful ways xxx ps. Says she, who would be petrified!

  9. Aw, thanks for linking my photo and for the well wishes! We are 5 days away from surgery and eagerly/nervously anticipating it.
I also find that some weeks it's definitely just more difficult to pick photos because we just don't get out much with Lucy right now. She's pretty restricted as far as what she does now, but I try to look at it as a chance to be more creative with the hum-drum days.
Poet is so beautiful. That curly blonde hair just gets me every time. :)

  10. Each week I seem to have a few that I really like, but I've been trying to choose the one which most sums up our week, or captures a glimpse of her personality, even if it's not necessarily my favourite photo. This week Olive's been taking her Woody and Jessie dolls everywhere, so a portrait with Woody was an easy choice. x

  11. This week it was so hard to choose - mainly because for once I took a LOT of photos! The camera seemed to come out daily. I chose photos based on the experiences we had, but I always try (and often fail) at picking the three that seem to "go" together.

I love this one of Poet - she looks so much older and wiser, it's really interesting when you capture, even by accident, an expression that gives you a glimpse into the future...And she has your lips without a doubt!

  12. I didn't take many photos this week, but we did have a bit of a "first" in our household, the first ever dance class, so my photo relates to that milestone more than being about the photo itself.

I'm finding that the motivation behind each week's photo selection differs for me!

  13. Oh little lady! I love trying to capture the fleeting expressions too. I chose my portraits this week as they summed up a perfectly slow weekend after the business of school. Both my babies revelled in the quietness...and the slowness. Hope your week is a lovely one :) xx

  14. that face and that expression, its a beautiful capture. I found this week very difficult for picture taking, no time seemed right and no photos suitable, but yesterday everything was calm and still and I quietly wandered and snapped. Not the best of shots but certainly representative of our morning, everyone taking a bit of quiet time after an emotional and stressful week..x

  15. Such a beauty Jodi! I feel like it was easy to choose my favorite portrait, the light on Passepartout while he cooked eggs was just perfect.

  18. Whenever I'm tired and overwhelmed, my creativity suffers. And I'm pretty sure that having a partner away for three months is tiring and overwhelming.
For me with a newborn at home, I'm at once inspired and exhausted and so I'm finding that I have few good images to choose from these days! But this week, my baby boy with a flower behind his ear, well....I had to!

  20. oh my, her hair, so gorgeous. Some weeks all I have is average to pick from this weeks the ones I thought would be great weren't but also I picked for a record of experience - or zoo trip. I've just finished making photo books from last years project and I think I've decided even if they aren't the best I need to include more experience shots in because those will be more memory evoking for the boys as they look back. (personally I like the close up, well lit, beautiful ones... balancing act to find!) x

  21. I love this picture of Poet. This week I hardly took out my camera. It felt like one of "those weeks"...blah. But this morning, as I was cleaning the house (getting ready for Scott's parents to arrive), I looked up and saw Lilia looking out the window with such longing and anticipation it made me pause. I grabbed my camera and captured it. Before this project I would have let that moment pass. I feel as if I'm becoming more aware of the smaller things, the simple moments, and I love that. Thank you so much. Thank you also for the most wonderful compliment on the photos I took last week. I am over the moon and honored.

  22. she looks so mature. just like many mothers when I feel like busyness kicking, my photos suffer

  23. Poet looks so thoughtful and cautious. Yes sometimes it feels like I am forcing the real camera photos - I tend to take them all at once and see what situation, light or expression takes my fancy. Despite only taking them today there were a few photos I could have chosen.

  28. I always struggle but then I am a newbie at all of this. The discipline of a photo every week is SO good!

  29. sometimes is so easy... but this week i forced me to take a picture to Zoe (for Alma i took the perfect picture two days ago). during wintertime (i'm from italy), with cold, rain, few hours of light, it's so hard sometimes!
Poet's picture is beautiful but somehow - for me - a little sad: i recognize that expression on my almost three years old daughter sometimes and i can't help but think that she is growing... my little baby...!

  30. She is just gorgeous! I didn't pull my camera out till Saturday so I was pretty pleased with the photos I ended up with! Here's hoping this week is a little less frantic :)

  31. For me it is generally a combination of the experience and the expression, mostly because I'm not a great photographer and am usually just snappy on my phone. I choose pictures that make me smile thinking of the moment they were taken and try to choose pictures that capture the kids having fun or being engrossed in an activity that made us laugh. This week we have my son"s excitement at the bell on his new trike - he's staring intently at it as he makes it ding - and my daughter proudly displaying a peanut butter cookie that she made - there's something about the very gentle way she is holding it that really melted my heart, especially as she is so rarely gentle.

  34. She really is beautiful Jodi. I chose this week's portraits quite easily. They were the only ones I had and they were taken on my phone! I've been waiting for my new camera to arrive and so hopefully next week's will be shot on that. x

  35. Aw, her little clenched fist really captures her hesitation. She looks so different here too, amazing the affect emotions can have on your expression.
